No acudió buscando protagonismo.

Janet Arce: The Extraordinary Heart of a Puerto Rican Woman Who Has Made Compassion Her Life’s Mission
A Puerto Rican entrepreneur, owner of Coquí, and founder of a humanitarian organization, Janet Arce embodies the spirit of service of those who make society stronger—not by seeking the spotlight, but by standing beside those who need help most
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND. — Some individuals leave a legacy that cannot be measured by the positions they hold, the honors they receive, or the photographs they take alongside prominent public figures. Their legacy is measured instead by the lives they touch, the families they support, and the hope they bring to people facing life’s most difficult circumstances.
Janet Arce, proudly Puerto Rican and Boricua at heart, belongs to this extraordinary group of individuals. An entrepreneur and owner of Coquí, an establishment whose name honors Puerto Rico’s iconic little tree frog, Arce is recognized for her commitment to Baltimore’s Hispanic population. She has transformed compassion into a daily practice and service to others into a genuine lifelong mission.
Her journey demonstrates that meaningful community leadership requires few speeches when it is supported by tangible action.
A Woman of Action and a Heart Without Borders
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when thousands of families faced economic uncertainty and struggled to obtain essential food supplies, Janet Arce responded with decisive action. She organized food assistance operations, mobilized truckloads of provisions, and coordinated the distribution of quality food through churches and community organizations.
At a time when many people were sheltering from the public health emergency, Arce devoted her resources, time, and energy to helping those facing the greatest hardships. Her commitment did not end when the emergency subsided.
Through the Janet Arce Foundation, she continues to advance humanitarian initiatives benefiting people experiencing homelessness, vulnerable families, and individuals in need of assistance.
On weekends, she mobilizes teams of collaborators—some compensated through her personal resources and others serving as volunteers—to distribute meals and provide assistance to those without stable housing.
Her work also includes helping individuals identify employment opportunities, facilitating connections, providing recommendations, and collaborating with churches and other institutions. For Janet, helping others is not an occasional undertaking. It is a way of life.
A Humanitarian Mission During the Francis Scott Key Bridge Tragedy
One of the most powerful examples of her dedication occurred following the collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, 2024, a tragedy that deeply affected Maryland and the nation. As emergency and recovery crews carried out their demanding work at one of the most devastating scenes in Baltimore’s recent history, Janet Arce mobilized humanitarian assistance to deliver food to workers involved in those difficult operations. She did not come seeking recognition. She came to serve. Her foundation organized a support mission that brought food assistance closer to the individuals working tirelessly at the site.
Latin Opinion had the opportunity to accompany this initiative as a volunteer participant, documenting a profoundly moving human experience. Through this humanitarian mission, our director, alongside fellow volunteers, was able to reach an area near the bridge that remained restricted to much of the news media.
The experience offered a close perspective on the magnitude of the tragedy and, above all, the extraordinary dedication of the workers engaged in the operations.
The photographs and videos recorded that day stand as a testimony to those moments and to the importance of citizen-led initiatives supporting emergency response efforts. Yet the central significance of that experience was neither the exceptional access nor the journalistic opportunity.
It was the humanitarian spirit of a woman who understood that, even amid tragedy, a meal, a word of encouragement, and a gesture of compassion can make a meaningful difference.
Leadership That Needs No Permission to Serve
Janet Arce’s story also invites us to reflect on how leadership is recognized within our society.Official ceremonies, institutional gatherings, and public honors often direct attention toward individuals with greater political visibility or established organizational connections.Yet another form of leadership is equally deserving of recognition: that of individuals who work quietly, commit their own resources, and respond to their neighbors’ needs without waiting for invitations, appointments, or rewards.
Such leadership deserves to be seen, respected, and celebrated. Janet Arce exemplifies this essential dimension of civic service. Her commitment to churches, willingness to support diverse initiatives, concern for the health and well-being of those around her, and enduring readiness to help demonstrate a profound sense of social responsibility.
As an entrepreneur, she also shows that business success can coexist with a deeply rooted humanitarian conscience. Coquí represents not only a connection to Puerto Rican traditions, flavors, and cultural identity, but also the determination of a woman who has created opportunities while remaining faithful to her heritage.
A Recognition Rooted in Respect and Gratitude
During Hispanic Heritage Month, Latin Opinion 360 proudly recognizes Janet Arce for her remarkable humanitarian contributions and for exemplifying the values of compassion, hard work, generosity, and civic responsibility. Her story reminds us that the contributions of the Hispanic population to the United States extend far beyond economic indicators, businesses, and statistics.
They are also reflected in churches receiving food assistance, individuals experiencing homelessness finding support, families rediscovering hope, and emergency workers receiving help when they need it most.Baltimore needs more individuals willing to build bridges of compassion, especially when circumstances seem to bring them down.
Through her actions, Janet Arce has already demonstrated that she belongs among these extraordinary citizens.Because genuine leadership is not about standing at the center of a photograph. It is about showing up when someone needs help. And because some honors do not depend on official resolutions or ceremonial recognition. They arise from the gratitude of those who have received a helping hand.
Janet Arce deserves such recognition.
